Can AI Regulation foster innovation?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming our world. From Alphabet’s DeepMind AlphaFold protein-folding technology to Tesla’s autonomous driving ambitions, AI holds immense potential for progress in healthcare, transportation, and countless other fields. The act aims to ensure the responsible use of AI by protecting fundamental rights and promoting transparency in AI applications. The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) emphasises human oversight, algorithmic transparency, and robust data protection measures to mitigate privacy concerns.

Consider the field of autonomous vehicles (AVs). Where Germany have implemented Autonomous Driving Act for testing AVs on public roads, focusing on safety protocols and data privacy. The Act now permits the operation of autonomous vehicles without a driver physically present, but only within designated areas under “technical supervision.” This allows companies like Waymo and Cruise to develop their self-driving technology responsibly while fostering innovation within the AV industry.

Collaboration is Key

No single country holds all the answers. International collaboration is crucial to establishing a global framework for responsible AI development. Initiatives like the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI), a multi-stakeholder body with representation from governments, industry leaders like IBM and Microsoft, to guide the responsible development and use of artificial intelligence, are fostering dialogue and promoting best practices for ethical AI development.
